Kings Landing Park The equestrian facility includes a 150 x 300 riding ring, judge's stand, restrooms, and water hydrants. Trails meander around the meadows and through the woods. Groups may have reservations for use of these facilities. It is suggested that equine enthusiasts call ahead to check on availability.
Biscoe Gray Heritage Farm The trails along the old fields, meadows, and forest edge transport riders back in time to when Calvert County was predominately farm fields and forests. The site provides parking for several trailers and approximately 90 minutes of ride time. Access is restricted. Users must get a free permit and provide a current negative Coggins report for each horse
Smoky Road, Huntingtown The State managed section of the Kings Landing Management Area has ample parking for trailers at the trail head of an extensive trail system within the forests and along fields. The site does allow hunting, so please check the kiosk at the parking area for hunting information.
Hiking Trails
Each of the Natural Resources parks have hiking trails offering a diversity of hiking experiences.
Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary An elevated boardwalk traverses through the bald cypress swamp provides hikers with easy access to this rare habitat.
Flag Ponds Nature Park A short half mile walk leads to the beach, while longer trails take hikers along the ponds and into the forests. A boardwalk leads to the Chesapeake Bay fishing pier.
Kings Landing Park Several miles of trails wander through the woods and around the meadows. A short walk leads to the Patuxent River for fishing or launching canoes and kayaks.
Biscoe Gray Heritage Farm The trails along the meadows provides several miles of hiking opportunities. In 2021, trails connecting to the Gatewood Preserve will be added.
Gatewood Preserve provides additional public access to open space for appropriate outdoor recreation such as water access, hiking, fishing and nature study and increases the protection of Battle Creek and the Patuxent Watershed. This property could be part of a trail connecting Prince Frederick to the Patuxent River.
Calvert County has had over 330 reported bird species. Most of the county is rural and habitats include tidal wetlands, freshwater marshes, beaches, forests, meadows, bay and river shorelines and even a cypress swamp.
