Reclaiming a Pet from our Shelter

Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter wants to ensure pets are returned to owners as soon as possible.

Proof of Ownership

Please be prepared with documentation to provide evidence of ownership:

  • Bill of purchase/adoption record
  • Medical records
  • Microchip registration
  • Pictures that document ownership over time (i.e., puppy through adult pictures)
  • Proof of rabies vaccine or licensing

Redemption and Impoundment Fees

Fees associated with reclaiming an animal from the shelter help to cover the fees incurred while the pet is in our care and the cost for impoundment of stray animals. Please call 410-535-7387 to inquire of the fees prior to coming to the shelter. The owner is responsible for reimbursement of external veterinary care the animal shelter was required to provide to safely and humanely house the animal.

Fees:

  • 1st Impoundment - $25
  • 2nd Impoundment - $50
  • 3rd Impoundment - $100
  • Daily Fee - $20

If your cat or dog does not have a Calvert County pet license, you will have to fill out the application when reclaiming your pet. The cost of the license is $7 for spayed/neutered animals, $20 for non-spayed/neutered animals and proof of rabies vaccination is required. Find out more information on our Animal Licensing webpage.
